How Modeling Transformed My Life

I started the Yinka Modeling Agency to encourage youth that they could be whatever they desire, despite coming from any challenging situations. From a young age, different mentors in school and performance opportunities helped me grow my leadership and confidence. Today I want to share a little more about why I started my agency, and what I learned from modeling.

A Bullied Nigerian Immigrant

As a first generation immigrating from Nigeria at nine years old, I experienced so much bullying. It caused me to question my worth and value from a young age. It wasn’t until the school matron planted seeds of greatness in me that I began to see a change. Those seeds would later bloom into confidence and self-worth. She helped me begin to grow beyond those harsh words and learn to love me for me.

During high school, my dean Miss Hornell encouraged me to pursue joining the flag team. I made the team! Being a part of it uncovered my passion for performance and strengthened my leadership abilities. These experiences in performance paired with my new found confidence opened the door for me to continue growing in college.

How Modeling Opened Me Up To Be Confident

As a freshman, I joined the Present Perfect Modeling Troupe at NIU. It birthed a passion for modeling that has stayed with me the rest of my life. I had opportunities to walk in many different shows, including CC & Styles, Knotty Loop, MHOD, Fe-Fe Designs, Aja Styles, Ashani Conture and KitiKouture. I have walked in the New York, Milan, Chicago, and Houston fashion weeks.

I have also modeled for different showcases and productions; Such as, Dare to Be Different, Blake Martin Experience, Keep it Klassy Hair Show, Black Women's Expo and Revolution.

Why I Help Others Through Modeling

Early on, I started modeling professionally because I enjoy walking on a runway. The experiences I had as a child laid the foundation for my unique sense of style and positive attitude in all settings. Not to mention that I simply enjoy looking good! People can see this whenever they see my walk - it’s full of confidence and poise!

Besides modeling professionally, I earned a degree in child development and math minor. Because of this, I have had the opportunity to work with callous youth both in and out of the system. Working with youth created within me the desire to impact their lives even more through an encouraging and positive outlet.

While my Nigerian heritage has always influenced my style choices, it also has allowed me to give children the space to express their uniqueness. You see, all of my experiences have shown me that I can change the trajectory of a child’s life by infusing confidence, courage, and character in them through the vehicle of modeling.
